Travelers often wonder if they're getting the best possible price on their cruise vacations. Happily, during its annual National Cruise Vacation Week, the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) sets out to ensure would-be cruisers of just that. Dubbed "The World's Largest Cruise Sale," the event kicks off on October 20 and comes to a close a week later on the 27th.
Major names in the industry—like Norwegian Cruise LineCelebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises—are participating, alongside river cruise companies AMA Waterways and Uniworld, expedition line Hurtigruten, and small-ship leaders like SeaDream Yacht Club.
So, what can you expect during National Cruise Vacation Week? Like any other sale, it's important to price compare, but generally speaking, you will save money on a cruise if you book during the week of October 20–27. Expect special offers like onboard credit, a percentage off the current cruise fare, complimentary cabin upgrades, reduced deposits, two-for-one cruise fares, free pre-/post-cruise hotel nights, and spa credits.

Review of Nine Stars Touchless Lid Trash Can: Does Nine Stars Plan Obsolescence? It's a great trash can until the warranty expires.

I have owned two of these trash cans and while it works great for the first year, in the case of both trash cans I purchased, it fails right around the warranty expiration date. In fact, I purchased one of these in the beginning of November, 2011 and it failed to operate properly in the first week of November 2012. The second trash can was purchased in November of 2012 and has just stopped working today (10/23/13). The second one is still under warranty but involves sending back to Nine Stars, paying shipping both ways and quite frankly, isn't worth the trouble.

If you visit their website (http://ninestarsproducts.com), you'll notice a big button on the front page that says "Click here to order replacement lids!". You'll also notice the cost is almost as much as buying a brand new trash can.

I don't know for certain if Nine Stars participates in planned obsolescence but it certainly appears that way. Companies have been sued for doing it in the past. In fact, Apple once got sued for designing laptop batteries to fail just after the warranty expires. For more information about planned obsolescence, you can check out planned obsolescence, you can check out http://www.offthegridnews.com/2012/09/07/products-made-to-fail-and-break/

Travel Agents Explained Part 1: How to use a travel agent, benefits of using a travel agency and when you should book online yourself

travel-agent-globe-example

One of the most common things I hear from potential new clients, both in person and over the phone is “I’m not really sure how travel agents work…” or “I’ve never used a travel agent before – how does the process work?” I thought it would be worth my time to try to explain the process in a blog post series. This series can serve as a reference for new Vacation Side Travel clients or for anyone searching for this information. There are many types of travel agents and agencies which accompany their own unique business practices so the information presented here doesn’t necessarily apply to every travel agent out there. If what you see makes sense and you’d like to consult with our agency, we encourage you to contact us.

This post is part 1 of a 3 part series:

Part 1: When should I use a travel agent? What can a travel agent do for me that I can’t do myself? What are the benefits and perks of using a travel agency?
Part 2: What is the best way to work with a travel agent? What information do I need to provide to my travel agent? What’s the best way to communicate with my travel agent?
Part 3: How much do travel agents charge? How do travel agencies make money? Can travel agents get the same deals advertised by giants like Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity?

When should I use a travel agent?

In general, you should consult with a travel agent any time you’re looking for the best deal, planning a complex or international itinerary, interested in a cruise, tour, vacation package, when there is a group traveling, you’re planning a destination wedding, honeymoon or any special event, including but not limited to, birthday celebrations, anniversaries, commitment ceremonies and vow renewals.

What can a travel agent do that I can’t do myself online?

I’ve covered this one in great detail in previous blog posts as well as YouTube Videos. I have listed hundreds of reasons you should use a travel agent. I’ve also talked about why you should use us in a post titled "Why do people need travel agents – or more importantly, why should they choose Vacation Side Travel?”, If you don’t feel like checking out old posts, I’ll give you a few scenarios to consider:

  1. You’ve Googled “Mexico all inclusive vacation,” and come up with 17.8 million search results. Need a little help deciding and deciphering what’s real and what’s not? Travel agents are constantly going through programs, courses, certification requirements and personally experiencing places, cruise ships, hotels, airlines and suppliers. They’ve formed relationships and know who provides the best services and which reviews are accurate and which are a bunch of bull.
  2. Remember when you used that travel website you found promising you the lowest price and free room upgrades at the hotel you selected only to find out after you got there that you spent your hard earned money and vacation staring at that newly paved parking lot which they’re still doing construction on beginning at 5AM every morning? Travel agents have direct lines of communication with many hotels, hotel managers and hotel companies. They can always make a quick phone call or pull the hotel up in their distribution system to check on any construction and find out detailed descriptions of the room types offered.
  3. How many hours were you on hold with the airline when your flight was delayed or canceled due to inclement weather? Travel agents have access to the same computer system the airline employees use and can usually make the change, rebook your flight or find out what the policy and procedure is for your exact situation and they can do it quickly.
  4. Did you intend on spending your anniversary or honeymoon lounging in a tiny swimming pool filled with screaming kids splashing wanted every where? A good travel agent knows which resorts are geared towards romantic couples, offers adults only section or is an adults only resort exclusively. Save yourself the head ache and use a travel agent!
  5. Want some more scenarios? Continue to more top reasons you should always use a travel agent.

How can a travel agent benefit me and add value?

Travel agents have access to deals, specials, extras and perks you can’t find online. How would you like a complimentary upgrade? Free breakfast, a couple of show tickets on the house? Perhaps arriving to your hotel in a limo is more your style? What if a travel agent was able to offer you a free honeymoon gift, a bottle of wine or champagne? Did you know that travel agents can get you a free wedding? They can! Just ask! Do you have kids? Wouldn’t it be great if you could have free baby sitting service by qualified and certified nanny's at the resort? Maybe your teens would benefit from access to a teen club where they could learn how to DJ, Paint, play tennis or scuba dive – all free? A travel agent can make these things and much more happen for you. How? Because they have years invested in building their relationships with suppliers, hotel staff and management and suppliers offer agents all sorts of things for their clients in exchange for their business and loyalty.

When should I skip the agent and book my trip online myself?

That’s really up to you. A travel agent is always willing to help you with any travel arrangements including airfare, hotel, car, cruise, tours, vacation packages, train, bus and ferry tickets, show tickets, excursions and much more. However, if it’s a simple domestic airline ticket or a quick car rental, you’ll be fine booking it online yourself. I would encourage you to do so using the travel agency’s online booking tool – after all, if you show your loyalty, travel agents will offer special perks and incentives as part of their own loyalty program.
