Experience A Memorable Vacation In Beautiful Crete

By Andreas Pantelidis

The Greek island of Crete is one of the most unique places in the world. It has a very hospitable location, landscapes that blend together in an unlikely cohesion, a history as Europe's first recorded civilization, and an architectural and artistic legacy that played a huge part in influencing other cultures during the Bronze Age. A vacation in this wondrous place will be an experience not soon forgotten.

As soon as one reaches the island, they can easily sense that Crete is unlike anyplace else. It can be felt in the way the local people speak and open their arms to warmly invite visitors to get the real Cretan experience which includes immersion in social activities, music, and tasting the cuisine. The untamed beauty that covers the land is awesome - from the wild foliage, wonderful olive tree groves, tall cliffs, rocks and beaches, and the way in which the sunshine reflects like crystals on the water and sand.

Four prefectures with various appeals, charms, and histories, make up the island. Those seeking a more modern and cosmopolitan adventure will appreciate the development and upscale resorts and larger cities in the north edge that is closer to Europe. Anyone wanting to see the land in a traditional and unspoiled way may prefer the south side facing Africa. Exploring them both results in a truly amazing holiday.

King Minos is fabled to have ruled this land, surrounding the ruins and cave systems with much wonder and mystery. The Ottoman pashas, Venetians, Arabs, Byzantines, and Romans, are among the throng of invaders and occupiers that have ravished the island over the centuries, making indelible marks on villages and towns. This history can be a tourist's dream.

With over 4,000 years of history there is much to do. There are the Roman-Byzantine ruins, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, and the battlements that belonged to the Venetian Fortezza, not to mention the amazing beaches, mountain trails, narrow lanes through quaint quarters, and many museums celebrating the old folkways of Crete. Visitors can even take part in the everyday life of welcoming locals.

April and May are the best times to find great accommodation in Crete because this is the period following the winter closings but preceding the influx of the high tourist season. However, it is best to have made reservations far in advance if visiting anytime between June and September, especially if wanting rooms in Chania, because of the great number of travelers.

For lighter crowds, better prices on accommodations, and weather that is more gentle, may want to consider visiting during the time frame of September and October. This incredible Grecian island is the perfect holiday destination filled with charm, history, tradition, and uniqueness.
